Cell Phone Radiation and Cancer–New Study by WHO

Cell phone radiation is again a topic on the news—in particular, the link between cell phones and cancer. On May 31, 2011 the WHO/International Agency for Research of cancer (IARC) released a study classifying cell phone radiation as a possible carcinogen. This puts cell phone radiation in a category with other carcinogens such as lead, chloroform, and gas exhaustion.

The conclusion of the international 31-scientist study was based on a review of hundreds of scientific articles, the majority of which showed an increased risk for cancer–and in particular, a malignant and usually fatal type of brain cancer called glioma–in connection with cell phone usage.

IARC Director, Christopher Wild, stated that

“Given the potential consequences for public health of this classification and findings, it is important that additional research be conducted into the long‐term, heavy use of mobile phones. Pending the availability of such information, it is important to take pragmatic measures to reduce exposure such as hands‐free devices or texting.”

The conclusions of this IARC report have understandably stirred controversy among scientists (most of whom are industry-dependent) who have continuously contended that cell phones are safe.
